Chapter Ten

Whistling a tune, Mitch took the steps two at a time as he raced onto Charlotte’s front porch. He rang the bell but waited rather than barge in as he usually did. His heart thumped at the prospect of seeing Amanda. Ever since the night of their kiss, he’d seen her several times a week, but only because Charlotte had invited him over for supper or his mother had insisted that he give Amanda a ride out to his parents’ house so they could discuss the music for the fundraiser.

Mitch had also spent time with Amanda at the big family Fourth of July celebration at his parents’ house. If he could call spending time with her, sharing that time with dozens of his relatives, including Jimmy. Mitch had kept a close eye on his cousin to see whether he intended to put any moves on Amanda. Jimmy had surprised Mitch and paid Amanda little attention. Maybe having Amanda as an employee had kept Jimmy at a distance. Whatever the reason, Mitch was happy.

He didn’t mind the way his mother and great-aunt orchestrated their little matchmaking plan, but he couldn’t believe he welcomed it. What had happened to the guy who had sworn off women after the debacle with Whitney? He had kissed Amanda, and she had turned a frog into a prince. A prince who was falling in love. He should be scared spitless, but he wasn’t.

He was determined to get her to change her mind and stay right here in Pineydale with him.

The door opened, and Amanda stood in the front hallway, her auburn hair gleaming in the sunlight. “Where’s your kilt?”

Mitch laughed. “In the pickup. You don’t think I’m going to drive all the way to Grandfather Mountain in it, do you?”

“Why not?”

Shaking his head, Mitch laughed again. “Because the thing is made of wool, and it’s almost ninety degrees.”

“You’ll still have to wear it when you get to the games.”

“Yeah, but it’s a little cooler up in the highlands.”

“I see.”

Mitch took in her red tank top and tan shorts that showed off her long, shapely legs. He shouldn’t go there, but he couldn’t help himself. “And I see you’re dressed for the warm weather, and your footwear is appropriate for roaming around the meadow.”

Amanda stuck out a foot. “I wore these especially for you because I know how much you like these red shoes.”

“I do. I can keep track of you in those.” Mitch stepped into the hall. “Are you and Charlotte ready to go?”

Charlotte appeared from the kitchen before Amanda could answer. “I’m not going.”

“Why not?” Mitch had his suspicions.

“I’m not feeling so well.” Charlotte rubbed her head. “I’ve got one of those awful headaches. I just wouldn’t enjoy myself, but you two run along and have a good time.”

“But you haven’t missed the games in years.” Mitch frowned.

Charlotte sighed. “I know. I hate to miss it, but I don’t want to drag my headache all the way to North Carolina and back. There’ll always be next year.
